Unfortunately it only takes us further away from that which it seems to bring - closing us off and taking us deeper into darkness and further from the aspiration of feeling connected, loved, worthy.

Although I have been eco-conscious for the past 38 years with purpose, we ache for more proactive measures by many more citizens in North America and throughout the world. Many countries have already met clean air standards but most have not budged or come close.
It is our responsibility to educate ourselves. Awareness + acceptance should lead to action. There are so very many action items we can do to improve the health of our environment that do not CO$T us. Do You Know What Happens to Your Cell Phone?

Cell phone recycling programs have been in place for over ten years, with the recycling rate stuck at just over 20%. Most cell phones still don’t get turned in. People know they are toxic and shouldn’t be put in the trash but often just don’t know where to recycle.

As people become more concious of and concerned about the environment, it’s important to know what happens to your cell phone, once you turn it in. Equally important is understanding the large number of these phones that get “reused”. Reusing more of what we purchase is the key to sustainability, so it’s as important to know if your provider reuses as how they recycle.

Currently about 60% of cell phones that get turned in get reused. This number would be higher if people turned their cell phones in at the time they replace it with a new phone. The number one reason phones aren’t reused is they are too old and the technology is obselete.

Our programs are focused on reuse. Many of the cell phones that get turned in are now going to prepay cell phone providers so that consumers have a more affordable cell phone option.

Cell phones that cannot be reused are smelted numerous times to isolate and reuse the mineral components. The plastic is one of the major components used to fuel the smelting process. Our cell phone recycling facility is a zero landfill ISO 14001:2004 facility.

We have special programs for corporations or other large groups that are going to reuse-recycle larger quantities that provides tracking down to the ESN, secure data removal, environmental reports that detail Energy Savings, Green House Gas Savings and Toxic Waste Reduction, computed by the EPA’s Electronics Environmental Benefits Calculator.

It’s fantastic to recycle your cell phone and hopefully more people will do so, but it’s important to know where it goes and how it’s handled environmentally.

Global Warming and Secrets of the Dead Zone

Read this - even if you don’t believe Global Warming exists! May never know if the info here can help you or someone you know.

With all the “noise” about Global Warming, it was hard for me at first to accept Carbon Dioxide as the culprit for Global Warming. With so many places getting colder, I was at first skeptical.

Global Cooling? I finally cleared my doubts on that with two people on Twitter (@HoodedMan and @ZeroGreenHouse). Bob (@ZeroGreenHouse) is an award-winning author for energy and greenhouse gas issues, by the way.

I still do not know which industry or machines produce enough CO2 to be a “planetary threat”, but I will find out sooner or later ! I do know there are many producing enough toxic fumes to cause Cancer and allergies!

Then, the Dead Zone caught my attention.

My God! Why did I not think of this before? That pathogens and germs cannot thrive in a high oxygen-charged environment. Germs that make people and marine life DIE!

What’s In Your Fragrance?

My son suddenly discovered body spray last year. When I read the label and saw phthalates I decided to find out what they were. What follows is some of the information I found.

Twenty years of research has suggested that phthalates disrupt the hormone system. Developmental and reproductive issues have been associated to some phthalates. Other research suggests the same mechanism may contribute to the growth of breast tumor cells.

Phthalates are used in a variety of common products from toys to air fresheners to skin care and cosmetics. Unfortunately most labels do not list phthalates as an ingredient because of a loophole that allows phthalates to be included in “fragrance” without being listed. Because fragrance is added to nearly every product consumers are being exposed to phthalates daily and often without even knowing it.

The easiest way to reduce your exposure to phthalates is to choose natural skin care and cosmetics that do not allow phthalates in their products. If you love fragrance choose products with essential oil blends or phthalate-free fragrances.
